The CAD class at our institution offers instruction in fashion sketching, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and Power Point in one semester. Many incoming students do not have sophisticated fashion sketching or computer skills. The bulk of the time spent in class is used to develop rudimentary skills and frequently students are not able to make progress without guidance from the instructor. Finally, a solution was found using a new technology: Camtasia Screen Recorder. The Camtasia Screen Recorder provides practical business software tools to capture and manipulate images, audio, and video from the Windows desktop. The advantage of this technology is that it allows students to practice independently to build the weaker areas of their skill set. The instructor is able to record the entire process and the student is able to replay the instructional videos as many times as is necessary to learn the new programs. The short video tutorials essentially liberate both student and professor alike. This research discusses the development of the new Camtasia video tools for a CAD fashion course and the initial reactions of the students who used them in class.
