Educating Designers in the Multicultural Europe
The paper presents a research experiment that investigates the possibilities of developing a positive trans-cultural Design Education that reveals the underlying values behind cultural exchange and cultural clash in the European reality. Inspiration and starting point of this work were the numerous multicultural Socrates/Erasmus student exchanges of the last decades, and also the families of political and economical refugees that Europe has recently received. The role of supervisors, of pedagogical methodologies and of modern technology in the educational process has been also discussed. Additionally the paper examines the possible, conscious or subconscious, influence of the students’ cultural backgrounds, diversities and heritages on the design process, and the influence of globalisation via the communication technologies on the designers’ sensibility and creativity. Examples will be provided, including designs and thoughts of participants from different countries and cultures.
