This paper is focused in an ongoing research project – Percept Walk, developed at CIAUD – Research Centre in Architecture, Urbanism, and Design in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Lisbon. Wayfinding is one of the design project fields where user-centered design methodologies are necessary and applied. A user-sensing design evaluation, way sensing, will focus on colour and background contrast colour definition for the written material and also on floor stripes; on the legibility and readability, by evaluating the most efficient typefaces, text sizes, letter spacing, and also adapted pictograms; and on the haptic evaluation of foot touch and its relationship with dexterity and balance. Everybody uses more than one sense to perceive the environment and through the way sensing process the gathered data will guide the development of a multimodal sensory-motor wayfinding system, which is visual and haptic, in this particular case. For the empirical part of the research project we are using an ophthalmological hospital in Lisbon. A well-designed wayfinding system can reduce hospital patients’ stress levels, aid efficient business practice, and ensure safe crowd management.
