Enabling Function-Behavior-Structure Mapping with Computational Synthesis: Using Agents for Commitment

The Function-Behavior-Structure (FBS) framework provides a clear framework for representing design stages and design activities, but lacks practical computational methods to execute the activities, particularly the synthesis activity. We use a bio-inspired design model to extend the FBS framework into detail synthesis and analysis steps that require different knowledge resource and are represented by three bio-inspired design mechanisms: induction, gene transcription and commitment. When the commitment mechanism is required and there is a lack of knowledge for executing this mechanism, agents are required. The agents’ rules and duties are analyzed and the configuration of a multi-agent design system is generated. The conceptual design of agents for design of chamber systems of integrated circuit equipment is established using the proposed framework to validate the method.

Dr. Yuemin Hou

Dr. Hou Yuemin graduated from Tsinghua University in China and obtained her Ph.D in mechanical engineering in 2005, with a focus on biology-inspired design theory and algorithms and multidisciplinary optimization of small satellites. Her research and projects used to focus on bio-inspired design methods and algorithms, dynamics of satellites and large equipment, neural network based control and design thinking, optimization, expert systems and engineering design. Her current research covers bio-inspired design methods and algorithms, multi-fields modeling, design system of IC equipment, agent oriented design commitment, autonomous systems and public space, which are supported by one university grant and three governmental grants. She has published more than 50 research papers as first and corresponding author and one book. Currently, she works as a senior research scientist in the Institute of Design Engineering of Tsinghua University in China.

Dr. Linhong Ji

Dr. Linhong Ji received a Ph.D from The University of Tokyo. Dr. Ji is a professor and an associate dean of the Department of Precision Instrument and Mechanology as well as the director of the Rehabilitation Engineering Center of Tsinghua University. Dr. Ji’s research interests include: rehabilitation engineering, rehabilitation robot, dynamics, and design theory and methodology.
